The Boon of Having a Custom Dog House

Whether your dog is an indoor or outdoor pet a dog house is a nice and sometimes necessary thing for it to have. We as humans need alone time and although we don’ think of our pets as needing the same they do indeed need alone time. This need is one reason a dog house is nice to have. There are times when a dog house is a necessity. If you prefer to have your dog outside than a custom dog house is the answer to his comfort and security. To customize a dog house you should analyze your dog’s needs, size and temperament.

The size of the dog house should be built to accommodate the size of the dog yet not too large because heat will escape in cold weather leaving the dog cold.  Keep in mind that the dog’s body temperature is on average about 101 degrees F (38.3° C) as apposed to our 98.6 degrees F (37° C). Therefore, he can tolerate a little more cold but less heat than we can. The house should then be customized to be just a bit larger than the dog itself. If the dog’s temperament is such that it will need to vent by running and jumping then the house should be built in an area to accommodate this.

A custom dog house should have many of the conveniences of the master house such as water, heat, air conditioning, shelter from inclement weather. A source of running water such as dog drinking fountain will allow the dog to drink fresh water whenever it wants to. In a cold climate heat is a necessary item in a dog house. This can be either carried into the dog house from the main house or by heating the floor with hot water carried by pipes under the flooring. Again, keep in mind that what would be comfortable for us may be too warm for the dog. An air conditioning unit can be set into the wall of the dog house high enough to keep his curiosity at bay. 

The structure itself, like our own houses, can be of wood, brick or stone. Carpeting is not advisable but a comfortable bed is  A door similar to the indoor/outdoor doors built to allow the dog ingress and egress from the main house can be built into a custom dog house to give the dog shelter from high winds, strong rains and other inclement weather.

Our pets have likes and dislikes as we do and by knowing what your dog likes and dislikes will help you to build a custom dog house that will make him a healthy and happy dog.  If your dog is comfortable and happy its loyalty will show in his eagerness to protect the home and family that it is a part of.  Whether your dog lives in a custom dog house or the master’s house it feels like a member of the family and should be treated as such.  By the way, don’t forget the dog toys.
